Pond Creek, OK Harvest

We started wheat in Pond Creek, OK last week. This is the second day we’ve been shut down due to rain on Sunday night.

I drove the combine for a couple of days this week, it’s been 6 years since I’ve cut wheat. I drove a little last fall when we did corn in South Dakota but not all day. It’s so amazing all the improvements in the newer machines. I can’t imagine what it will be like when our boys are older.

A little Bambi was hanging around us all day. She had been separated from her mom and both of them were frantically looking for each other.

We sent Mick and Max home on a plane from OKC to spray our crops in North Dakota on Monday. They will be back by the end of the week.

I took some pics of the elevator in Enid, OK. I didn’t know the elevator was such a big deal until this winter we watched Aerial America Oklahoma on tv and they were showing the elevator. Enid was known as the wheat capital of America. Here’s some more information on Wikipedia.

The harvest has begun

We have added 2 New additions to our family. Our granddaughter, Mollie-Jayne was born on April 4th.

We also got a new sheltie puppy. Her name is Sadie and she’s quite a sweetheart.

This is Sadie’s mom, Sophie.

We thought it was perfect her mom’s name is Sophie since that was the name of our smooth collie that has been missing since October when we were harvesting corn in Harrold, SD

We’ve put in lots of hours this month. We were only able to plant a partial crop at home due to the late spring and wet conditions. It’s been pretty crazy this week. We picked up our camper on Sunday afternoon and had it ready to go by Tuesday. Monday was a crazy day and couldn’t end soon enough. I brought Sadie & Peaches to the vet for shots about 90 minutes away. I noticed bloody paw prints on the vets floor. Sure enough, our Peaches was bleeding – broke her rear middle claw and had to be sedated so it could be clipped back. She’s doing good now but has always hated her feet being touched so she will probably have to remove her own bandage.

We finally made it home around noon to resume loading the camper. Around 1:45 I hear a blood curdling scream out of Brett. I knew it was bad – he had his thumb slammed into the hinge side of the screen door on the camper. I called our doctor and of course they thought I should bring him in for an X-ray just in case it was broken. We spent the rest of the day in the ER. Everything turned out to be fine and it was a good thing it had bled so it wouldn’t throb.

We have headed south and are harvesting wheat and canola in Oklahoma now. The crops aren’t yielding very good in Oklahoma. The winter wheat has been affected by storms, drought and freezing temperatures at the wrong time.

A week in October

Mick & I have been putting lots of miles on between ND & SD moving headers and finishing up our own soybeans. Max started preschool this month so the kids and I will continue to go back and forth until we are done combining sunflowers. We finished up the corn harvest in SD on Friday and started sunflowers in SD on Monday. It was so windy on Wednesday in SD we had to shut down.Brett loves carrying the corn cobs around. Our typical farm boys love playing on the tractor tires whenever its parked.We had a buck and doe walking back and forth in the field just a few rows over from the combine. There are so many deer in the corn! We found a big bull moose about 20 miles southeast of our farm Monday night, of course I only had my cell phone for a camera.We finished up our soybeans at home on Tuesday.

I made some more Peach Salsa, a lot of chopping but it is so good!We had roasted delicata squash on Tuesday night. I found it at the farmers market in Pierre, SD. It is supposed to be a mix between butternut squash and sweet potatoes. It was very good I wish I had more – the kids loved it!Our sunrise at home on Wednesday.We had a great fall skillet for supper on Wednesday with chicken and apple sausage (Sam’s Club), bacon, onions, sweet potatoes, mushrooms and tomatoes on top of spaghetti squash.

This morning we had some deer enjoying some spilled soybeans as our dogs stayed curled up enjoying their warm bed. We are under a winter storm warning today, so far we have only had a much-needed rain.
